We all know that crime is on the rise. We see it in our neighbourhoods and on the news each night. In 2000, the Australian Institute of Criminology recorded 436,865 reported property crimes of "unlawful entry with intent", that is, household  and business break-ins. And this is only counting the crime that was reported. Countless cases of unlawful entry go unreported every year.

Insurance companies claim that households and businesses with a properly installed and monitored alarm system have much greater access to discounts on their insurance premiums in comparison to those premises fitted with an alarm system that "just makes a lot of noise".  So which would you choose?

Types

dialer
DIALER MONITORING

The standard dialer type of communication from your security system to our monitoring centre operates via a standard phone line or PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). Each time the security system creates and sends a signal to the monitoring station's alarm receivers, it dials our centre and makes, for want of a better term, a phone call to us. This is similar to the way a modem will operate to connect you to the internet... or the way a fax connects. Our monitoring centre then receives this signal (standard call charges apply) and our centre activates whatever process you have specified to be actioned when this type of alarm signal is received.

This type of communication is the most cost-effective, is easily installed and the most common with residential and small commercial applications.

DIALER WITH GSM BACKUP

For those seeking additional protection in the case of phone line failures or accidental (or deliberate) cutting of the physical phone line, the dialer with GSM backup is a superb option. This is because the security system can still send our monitoring centre a signal despite interruptions to your phone line. This system uses a GSM mobile phone network to transmit the signal in the event of land-line failure.

This is another cost-effective means that requires a SIM card (like you find in a GSM mobile phone) to be part of your security system (standard mobile connection or plan rates apply).

Since phone lines can fail for a number of reasons (storms, maintenance issues, sabotage), the GSM backup option is deal for those requiring a higher level of monitoring than the dialer alone.

gprs
GPRS - THE WIRELESS SOLUTION

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) allows data to be sent between your security system and ASM's Monitoring Centre. In addition, this option monitors the integrity of the communications link between you and us.

GPRS operates on a mobile phone network and sends data at specified intervals, allowing our Monitoring Centre to identify any loss of communication. In fact, our GPRS service will "poll" or check your connection at varied times from 90 seconds (for high security applications) to 240 minutes (for lower security applications).

Most GPRS devices allow a backup communications path to be connected in the event that the GPRS connection is lost which provides even greater protection. And at any time, you can swap between the primary and secondary communication paths.

Variable fees and charges apply for connection to the GPRS network based on your selection of polling rate for communication integrity checks.

IP ALARM MONITORING (INTERNET PROTOCOL)

IP alarm monitoring uses either an existing alarm system with IP network capibility or an additional universal plug-in module which communicates through your home or business internet connection.

When you add backup by dialer or GSM, you have a formidable level of communications fail-safes which present the very highest level of line supervision.

For this type of communication to work on our monitoring system, you need a constant and reliable internet connection (such as ISDN or ADSL) with your internet service provider.

In the case of a business or corporate environment, a quick check with your IT professional will ensure this system is compatible with your own set-up.
